Time Slip to Edo period! KOKURAYA CAFE

Last week, I attended the opening ceremony of a new café, “KOKURAYA,” located about a 10-minute walk from Himeji Castle.

According to the owner, Tomohisa Shiomoto, the building was originally a metalware shop built over 200 years ago, dating back to the Kansei era of the Edo period.

The renovation took more than three years, during which he carefully preserved its traditional structure and interior so visitors could experience the atmosphere and understand what life was like at that time. “People tend to focus only on the castle tower, but it was the economic power of the townspeople that supported it,” he said.

The decor is impressive, and you might find the 200-year-old shelf fascinating. The seating arrangement is also unique, featuring a charming tatami room at the back of the shop with a view of the garden.

You can enjoy a cup of coffee made with beans from a local roaster, and they also serve herbal teas made from locally grown herbs.

This café is a place where history comes alive through its preserved architecture and inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply in search of a cozy spot to unwind, KOKURAYA offers an experience that is both enriching and delightful.
